Flower Gardening Tips:

Following are some important points to be considered to nurture hobby of flower gardening.

Location: Selecting the proper location for gardening depends on the type of the flowers you wish to grow in your garden. Some flowers like roses and lilies require warmth and sunlight for proper blooming while flowers like ‘lily of the valley’ do better in the shade. Having the place with good drainage, bright sunlight and good soil will result in endless blooms from spring through fall. Survey the area before designing the garden. When designing the garden in the yard, bigger the yard, bigger will be the garden. A poorly designed garden will leave yard looking more cluttered than a small yard that is well designed.
Preparation of Soil: The productive flower farming begins with quality soil. There are three main types of soils used in gardening – clay, sandy and loam. Clay soil is hard and does not drain well and compacts tightly so that roots do not spread. Sandy soil drains too quickly for flowers to gather proper amount of water. This type of soil provides little or no nutrients to the growing plants. Adding generous amount of compost and top soil can produce a quality planting bed. The loamy soil is best for growing flowering plants.
Water thoroughly: After planting the seedlings they require a sufficient amount of water. The watering can is ideal for this task. It delivers good quantity of water avoiding the seed from dislodging.
Fertilize Regularly: The heavy feeder plants may thrive with regular application of liquid or fertilizers. Most fertilizers available for flowers are high on nitrogen, which promotes top growth.

Designing a beautiful garden involves hard work and a lot of creativity. The above flower gardening information helps you to know the basics of the flower gardening. These tips will help you to design your garden properly. A well designed garden makes any landscape and its surrounding more beautiful. It can enhance the beauty of home and increase the home’s value.

How to build a natural Pond

The placement of any in-ground pond is essential. You will need to consider several factors into deciding where and what you and your family, friends and neighbors are going to actually see when the pond is completed.

You can build your pond, water feature, patio water garden, koi pond or whatever you like to call it, from a variety of materials, including hard plastic liners, rubber liners, rigid plastic or fiberglass liners or even from concrete. This article will tell you how it should be done using the plastic method.

A plastic liner can easily be purchased online or at your local nursery.  When purchasing your pond liner, be sure to read the fine print.  Basically, flexible liners are either rubber or plastic.  Rubber is more expensive but works much better and it does cost more.  The thickness should be about 40 milimeters or more and should work well with most average size ponds.

The pool itself should be placed on a low, level area, where it would naturally occur. A small slope is fine especially if you are going to have a waterfall in the garden pond. The water flow needs to look natural and flow down hill. You can leave the ground sloped or even enhance the slope where you intend to put the waterfall while easily leveling the pond area.

]]>

It is best to avoid placing the garden pond underneath trees or large shrubs as they will need more frequent cleaning of the pond.  Shade will generate more moss, and algae, which means less types of water plants and frequent cleaning. This should not impede your quest for a natural pond.  There are many low light water plants that can used.  Hiring a pond cleaner is also an option.

Don’t place your garden pond where you will receive runoff containing debris or water from roof tops, street, streams or any water that might be toxic. You will probably want to have plants and fish in the pond which are highly sensitive to foreign chemicals in the water. Even runoff which passes over cement can be highly toxic. Cement also contains lime which raises the pH level. Fish can tolerate a wide range of pH levels, but the constant changes will stress them out and could kill them.

It is important to note what your final view of the pond will look like. A pond visible from a large main window in the home can add considerable enjoyment of your home.  If placed in the front of an entry-way a pond can be quite a view for your visitors.

Imagine coming home everyday and enjoying the koi fish and the soothing sound of water cascading downstream. A waterscape pond feature in your garden will turn your hard day at work into a tranquil environment.

Remember these are pond garden tips and are for those who are looking to do it themselves.

Tips on Garden Design

People use different gardening designs according to their own imagination. The garden, after all, is an important part of the home. This is the place that offers your visitors their first impression of your home and also shows the personality of the owner. They introduce plants, flowers and different related items. Some people take help from the professionals while others want to decorate their home’s gardens themselves. Those people can sometimes give all their attention to their gardens.

Gardening lovers can follow the different tips and techniques of designing a garden. The first idea is that you can build a small pond or swimming pool in the middle of the garden and install flowers of different colors around the pool. That design will create the natural look. That design will also provide you a place of relaxation where you can sit in that atmosphere to escape those tough stressful times of your day to day life.

That design will not only give relaxation but also increases the beauty of the home which in turn will help those who come into your home to make their mind cool should they come back home in an angry mood. Your gentle gardening design will play its part in creating a pleasant calming effect on the human minds.

The installation of a fountain in the corner of the garden with combination of lightings of different colors will enhance the look of the garden. The fountain may need a little bit of extra care but it gives an awesome look. You can install a small waterfall as one option of many different unique designs.

]]>

You might want to position the waterfall in front of a small canal from where the water will pass to plants or waste. In the middle of the canal, why not make a bridge like we see on rivers. A small bridge will give you that natural look. Around the bridge you can plant flowers of different types. That is an example of garden design at its best.

The best thing about designing your garden is that we can use stones and other materials like different rocks in the designing of your garden. The stones and rocks are put to good use when we make waterfalls in the garden. The rocks give a natural look implying the water is falling naturally in different mountainous areas.

You can put the rocks at that place from where water is falling or at where water falls and other, different looking stones can be used around the water fall area. You can also fix the stones in the making of the waterfall instead of using bricks. That kind of gardening designing is known as civilized gardening due to the natural look that the gardener creates.

A very important aspect of many garden designs is the careful use of lighting. Subtle lighting allows people to enjoy the beauty of the garden in the evening or at night time. It also enhances the beauty of the garden, so the garden looks more awesome compared to morning time. If your garden is designed properly it should give you the kind of relaxation that no one other place on earth can match. Ideally, it should be a kind of paradise for you and your family, a place you will want to spend your free time as a place of leisure and relaxation.

The selection of furniture for your garden is another vital element. You need to choose your garden furniture opting for the very best type for sitting in the garden that gives you the most amount of comfort whilst still being sturdy enough to resist the elements of the changing seasons. So you have to focus on the design of the furniture.

Select the design which you think will best suit you and your garden. Different types of furniture are available in your local gardening stores. If possible, only select the very best of furniture that uses quality wood iron and steel. Those three types are best because they are durable and the rain will not affect those types. So, you can possibly leave the furniture outside overnight without any worries.

For gardening design, you can get help from some professionals. If you want to design it yourself then you can get help from one of Andrew Dumbleton’s city garden design courses. He has an online site that offers a quality course that provides you with all the help you need for guiding you about gardening designs. The pictures of different designed gardens are available on his site so you can get the basic ideas. However, his gardening design courses will take you to the next level.

Andrew Dumbleton’s garden design courses offer information and tips that are simple to pick up and apply, and it doesn’t take much practice or cost all that much either. You can read
how to do it in his very excellent informative blog simply by clicking on the following words: Garden Design Courses.

British Waterways is calling on all keen photographers to get outside and capture an original image of a busy bumblebee by a canal or river.

The winning entry to the 2009 wildlife photo competition will win a massive £100 cash prize.

Children are also invited to enter a special competition open to under 14s. £50 worth of vouchers is on offer for the best photo and the best drawing of any wildlife spotted by the canals.

The photo competitions are running alongside British Waterways’ annual wildlife survey, which encourages members of the public to record sightings of various species along UK canals and rivers. This year the survey is focusing on the endangered bumblebee, with ecologists keen to see which area of the UK receives the most sightings.

Although the bumblebee is the undisputed star of the survey, British Waterways is also very keen to hear about sightings of more common residents of the riverbank, such as ducks, swans, voles, moorhens and coots. So how about an afternoon of wildlife spotting this weekend? Don’t forget to take your camera and you could be in with a chance to win some money!
